About Us

A century of conservation in America, and over 90 years in Elgin.

In 1922,  the Izaak Walton League of America was founded in Chicago, and soon became a national organization. The League has carved out a unique role, promoting hands-on conservation and citizen science while advocating for strong state and national policies to protect our air, water and wildlife.

Making an impact in Elgin since 1931

Our Elgin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League started in 1931. Known as the “Elgin Ikes,” our chapter’s  first big project was spearheading work to improve a muddy patch of land in the Fox River. Members stabilized and enlarged the islands and created a park that is named after the chapter–Walton Island. The park continues to be a landmark and great place for recreation and fishing. Since then, our chapter has continued to fight against pollution in the Fox River watershed, organizing creek monitoring and cleanup, and helping Elginites enjoy the outdoors.

Our chapter has been as an important part of Elgin over the years as we both improve the environment and promote outdoor activities.
